Interview with titleholder Evi van Acker (BEL)

1.

Is your strongest point your boatspeed or your tactics?

In light to medium breeze it’s combination of both. The boat has good speed almost automatically which gives me all the time in the world to concentrate on my strategy.  When it gets really windy I put a lot of energy in making the boat go fast and I find it harder to be alert and to control the rest of the fleet. But I’m getting there!

      2.        Were you well prepared for the event?

Not really! I worked towards the ISAF Worlds in Cascais and this event was not in my planning as I’m going to China on August 5th. After a disappointing result at the Worlds I was keen on competing anyway.

I heard that Scheveningen is really nice place to sail with big waves and big tide and of course  I have a title to defend

3.        Do you feel stronger then at the Worlds in Cascais?

I feel just as strong. During the Worlds I made too many mistakes and there was no lucky angel on my shoulder. It was the first time this year I was not on the podium. And it was the first time ever that I was not allowed to sail the medalrace. Although I was very disappointed I learned a lot and that’s what it’s about when you are working towards the Olympic Games. Every campaign has its ups and downs and it’s better to deal with a loss now then next year.

      4.        Describe your ideal day..

Easy one! Sunshine, big waves and a nice breeze

      5.        How was your first photo shoot with Magic Marine?

Well it was very typical: Windy every day except on the day of the photo shoot. We decided to tow my boat with the cameraman sitting on the deck wearing a wetsuit while I was fully hiking behind the rubberboat. It was lots of fun! Last month when I was training in Cascais I was asked to model for the casual clothing of the summer of 2008. I was quite sick and it was raining a lot in the beginning but we all made the best of it and the sunshine came in the afternoon. The shoot was a big success so wait until you see the folder!

       6.        What do you think of the organization?

After one day on the water I can say that the course was perfect. The marks were in place and the races were not too short, not too long. It was a bit hard to see the marks because of the big waves so thank god the starting ship is that big so we can orientate a bit easier! On the shore everybody is very friendly and helpful. Normally everybody just wants to go home but here the Sailors Lounge is loaded with people.  Maria’s food is delicious and there’s  a free wireless which actually works. Everybody is working hard and trying their best to make life as easy as possible for the sailors. Quite special.
